Chicken and Watermelon— and Black people, a 2-minute History.

|Hi, my name is Erin, and I will be your African American History professor for today! In today’s 2-minute lesson, we are going to get educated on how and why serving *FRIED CHICKEN AND WATERMELON* to “celebrate Black History Month” is steeped in a deep history of good ol’ fashioned American racism and oppression! Alright! Let’s begin!

Though the stereotype started long before the 1900s, we can trace the perpetuation of the ‘niggers love fried chicken’ thing back to the popular classic 1915 Klan film, “Birth of a Nation”, where actors depicted Black elected officials losing their collective cotton-pickin’ minds in a legislative hall, being unruly, throwing shit, yelling, drinking, putting their feet up on desks, and inappropriately and ostentatiously eating — you got it— fried chicken! Needless to say, this stereotype has lasted and solidified as a racist depiction of Black folk for almost a century now.

The origin of the “Black people + chicken/watermelon” model probably comes from Black’s resistance to slavery, wherein they would steal their slave owner’s livestock and crops (commonly chickens/watermelons). This was not only for survival (as the common protein sustenance given to slaves were the ‘waste’ bits of Master’s food [i.e. intestine/chitterlings]), but as an act of silent disobedience and rebellion. Proponents of slavery depicted colored folk as a simple-minded lazy thieving lower life form, who didn’t need to be burdened with complex things like ‘freedom’ and ‘equal rights’, as they were perfectly satisfied with simple pleasures, like a little rest in the shade, and a piece of watermelon as a treat. The depiction of Blacks’ insatiable appetite for watermelon became a symbol of the Blacks’ primitiveness, and need to be kept in bondage, and a justification for discrimination, dehumanization, and a bid to strengthen Jim Crow.

During the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, “coon cards” were popular postcards, depicting African-Americans fighting over, eating, stealing, and even becoming— you guessed it— watermelons. Lots of these cards featured depictions of bug-eyed orb-headed animalistic-looking Blacks, salivating at the mere sight of a big slice of watermelon, and these images were also featured on ashtrays, drinking glasses, cookie jars, in books, on clocks, banks, games, and other novelty items. More recently these images from the early 1900s have been given new life, in the form of posters, mouse pads, watch faces, mugs, and more, and are usually referenced as items of the “Old South”.

Minstrel shows helped to propagate the stereotype of colored people as stupid and lazy brutes, with the genre of music called “Coon Songs”, such as “The Watermelon Song” and “Oh, Dat Watermelon” which were popular on minstrel show stages during the mid 1800s on.
Ever heard the songs “Turkey in the Straw” or a later version, “Pop Goes the Weasel” or “Do Your Ears Hang Low”? If you’ve ever heard an ice cream truck, you have! Well, another very popular version of this little ditty was recorded in 1916 (or 1902, depending on who you ask) and was called “Nigger Love a Watermelon Ha! Ha! Ha!” wherein it is sung that watermelon was “the colored man’s ice cream” and that there was “nothing like a watermelon for the hungry coon.” This, and many other “Coon Songs” were immensely popular between 1880-1920, some selling millions of copies.
During the same time, “Watermelon Pictures” were popular film depictions of Blacks doing typical Black things, like stealing chickens and eating watermelons.

The 1920s on still perpetuated this stereotype, though its ubiquity died down after the 1970s, but, if history is known for one thing, it’s the fact that it LIKES TO REPEAT ITSELF!

So no, chicken and watermelon are not in and of themselves “racist foods”, but the coupling of Blacks, fried chicken, and watermelon has a deep-seated history in Jim Crow Era politics, the attempted (and some success of) dehumanization of a marginalized group, justification for the slavery, murder, fear of, and hate for African-American people.

And for those of you who want to say, “BUT NIGGA THAT WAS YEARS AGO”, all I ask for you to do is to look up “Obama” and the word “watermelon” or “chicken”, and do me a favor and tell me again about how this is old news, and how we are now living in a Utopic Post-Racial Society.

Oh, and p.s.: Please send me a post card.
